Things To Do - Golf

This page offers some brief details on a selection of the golf courses located in the Charente-Maritime, there are others which will be added to the site at a later date…

We have not included reviews of all the courses at this stage as we haven't played them and we would prefer to provide our own review rather than that of a tour company so please bear with us and as soon as we've been round the course we'll put up the reviews or make them available at treize, we are always happy to receive any comments on the courses from any other golfers!

Personal Reviews

Golf de Saintes

Route de Golf; Saintes

Located on the road to Cognac the course is easy to locate.

As you drive towards the clubhouse the course looks tidy and gives no indication as to what to expect. There is a driving range and putting green available in front of the Clubhouse.

The Clubhouse is modest in appearance and facilities. There appear to be limited amounts of balls etc. and most of the clubs for sale were second hand. The good sized restaurant was closed on the Monday we played.

However, the welcome was very warm. The lady in the pro shop endeavoured to answer all our questions and apologised for the lack of catering. The changing room is again modest and no towels are provided.

There are limited buggies available for hire but I recommend you get one if you suffer any form of disability.

The course starts with a tricky par 4 with a narrow gap to the green. The 2nd is a par 3 needing a good shot to avoid the overhanging trees. The 3rd, a par 5 plunges downhill followed by the 4th which goes all the way back up. This is mountain goat country! After the 5th the course flattens but remains a big challenge off the tees with blind shots and tree lined fairways.

The second nine is more open and I suspect built at a different time. The holes are more parallel to each other and ther are a lot less trees. Even so there are dog legs to keep you honest and tee shots need to be accurate. The walking on this nine is very much easier.

Value for money?

On the Monday we played the green fee was 29 euros. Although the facilities were less impressive than Cognac the course itself was far more interesting and a much greater challenge. It is perhaps a course you need to play twice to enjoy it fully as the first time you will be on a steep learning curve of the various pitfulls. Get a buggie and enjoy.

Golf de Saintes has the added bonus of only being 20 minutes from treize and not far from the town itself, so, if like me you're not a golfer yourself, you can drop the golfer off and have four hours shopping & drinking coffee, watching the world go by in the town.

Is an 18 hole course Par 72 (6142 metres) with 4 practice holes & a well presented driving range; very swish clubhouse and changing facilities and a well-equipped pro-shop. We found all the staff to be very friendly and helpful. Buggies (voiturettes) are available for hire and we would strongly suggest that if you are playing in the summer that you do so!

The first impressions when approaching the course are created by the manicured area surrounding the clubhouse plus the sight of the 10th fairway stretching away uphill into the distance.

Facilities are good with a well stocked pro shop, a good sized changing room with towels provided for showering and a large bar and restaurant. There is a practice range and chipping area, although this is some 200yds away across the road so leave adequate time for practice.

The course itself is fairly open with lightly packed trees defining the fairways, these being quite generous in width. However, in general the holes are much the same. There is little trouble off most tees with only a couple of bunkers protecting each side of the green. The course has one or two more interesting holes like the 9th where a small lake comes into play, but after the good first impression on arrival the course itself is a little disappointing.

When played in early July the course was very dry with temperatures in the mid to high thirties. The course may have more teeth when lush with grass, but the lack of variety off the tee leaves one wanting a greater challenge.

Value for money?

I have to say that overall the cost of 49euros was over the top. If price is no object then give it a go and make a day of it by visiting one of the distilleries in the town.

Golf du Cognac is situated 3 km East of Cognac. It lies between Saint-Brice and Bourg-Charente not very far from Jarnac.
On the A10 Paris - Bordeaux motorway, take the Saintes exit then the RN 141 / E 603 Saintes - Cognac road.
Just before you get to Cognac, follow the signs to Angoulême (either take the by-pass, or go through the town centre).
At the large roundabout just outside Cognac, take the Saint-Brice road and turn right at the next roundabout. The Club is signposted from there.
